The Hunger Games

The hunger games is a book that follows Katniss Everdeen on her journey from a small town poor girl with a talent for hunting as she fights 23 other teenagers to the death in a cruel game held by the capitol. The Hunger Games have a non-optional reaping for every kid in every district, 1 boy and 1 girl are chosen from each district, 1 boy and 1 girl are sent into an arena to fight for their lives for the entertainment of others, and the opportunity to feed their district for a year.

Katniss Everdeen, a girl from district 12, the poorest district t of them all. A girl with a passion for hunting, and unmatched skill with a bow. Katniss’s 12-year-old sister is the girl who is “reaped” for district 12 but Katniss makes a move never seen before and volunteers in place of her sister. This is an outrageous move of courage by Katniss because she knows Prim has no chance in the arena and doesn’t want to lose her sister. I respect this move by Katniss as not only is she volunteering herself for potential death she is saving her little sister for imminent death and knows she could never have lived with herself had she let prim go. This is something many people would not do, they would just let their sister walk to death and not try and save her. Katniss knew she had a better chance in there due to her skill with the bow so overall was a very tactical move by her. I cannot relate to this in the sense of volunteering myself to fight to the death but what I can relate to is wanting to protect someone you like. When one of the boys is getting in a niggle on the rugby field everyone is in their backing them up, putting themselves in there to protect their friend.

A message I took from the text is that sometimes you gotta sacrifice yourself in order to let the people you love flourish. Katniss was basically sacrificing her self when she volunteered over prim to go to the games. At that stage, death was a strong possibility for Katniss, but she would rather die than live without her sister. This relates to normal life by not sacrificing your life but sometimes sacrificing your ego for the greater good. For sometimes being the bigger person in tough situations and taking a knock yourself so that other people don’t get affected. This is a bit like in year 5 I took all the blame for some trouble me and my mates got in at school even though it was a group of like 6 of us.

The whole games themselves were a challenge that Katniss had to deal with. Putting herself into an arena where only one person may leave alive is a challenge that not many people would stay composed in. Katniss, on the other hand, a silent hunter, the underdog, stayed composed to win. She knew she couldn’t die or Prim would feel forever guilty, she knew that she had to go through with what she signed up for and that’s exactly what she did. “You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope”. This is something Katniss said and lived by during the whole games, she never let Prim’s face leave her mind and that is what motivated her to do what she did.

The Hunger Games. This title is very applicable to the text as the whole book is focused on “the hunger games”. The winner of the games receives a whole years worth of food for their district from the Capitol. This is why it is called the Hunger games as the tributes are fighting for food. I would recommend this book to everyone, its a booke that a great majority of people have read and anyone who hasn’t read it should immediately. There are a lot of lessons to be learned in the book as well as it is super entertaining.

In conclusion, I think the hunger games by Suzzane collins is a great book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
